What this is

About 134 million babies are born in a year. Here you are drawn as one of them and live a whole life, split into eight stages, in about 3 minutes. Each stage has one or two choices. At the end you get that life as a single receipt.

Real values and calculated values

Births by country (population × crude birth rate), life expectancy by sex, under-5 mortality, GDP per capita (purchasing power), the Gini index, school enrollment, urban population share, employment in agriculture, access to electricity and the internet, the fertility rate, and the share of women married before 18 are the most recent values in the World Bank's open data, used as published. On screen, a sentence followed by a year in parentheses is one of these values. Where the World Bank has no value, nothing was filled in, and that sentence does not appear for that country.

Numbers marked "estimate" are calculated by this game from the values above.

  • Length of life: drawn from a mortality curve fitted to life expectancy and under-5 mortality (risk grows by a fixed proportion with each year of age). The Health and People scores raise or lower the risk slightly. "Ranked of 100" is the order you would hold if everyone of the same sex born in the same country followed this curve.
  • Income: average earnings are set at 60% of GDP per capita, the Gini index shapes the distribution inside the country, and your amount is read at the rank set by household, schooling, and choices. Amounts are shown in purchasing-power dollars.
  • World rank: your position in a world distribution built by combining each country's distribution, weighted by population.
  • Household: one of five income groups, each drawn with equal probability.

Names, events, and causes of death are made up. Names come from lists picked by hand for each cultural region. Heavy events such as the death of a young child or an early marriage also come up, at the rate the country's values give.
